Gallian Chronicles Getting Prettier

Anyone checked out the trailer for Valkyrie Of The Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles from the Japanese PSN? Thanks to it’s unique look, rendered by Sega in-house tool Canvas, I am really looking forward to this action/strategy game. There were some new screens of the game floating in the Internet a few days ago, so let’s take a look at what this game really about.

Currently being worked on by the team behind the Sakura Wars (Sakura Taisen in Japan) series, Gallian Chronicles spots a refreshing watercolored look that differentiate itself from typical grand looking Japanese RPGs. The game is set in 1930 fictional Europe, when Empire and Federation, the largest nations in the continent, were at wars. Duchy of Gallia is a small country sandwiched in between and has so far remained neutral. Things changed when Empire attacks Gallia, just when the capital city is about to fall, a small voluntary army lead by the game’s main character, Welkin Gunther, somehow defeats the huge army of Empire.

Most of the scenes revealed so far focused on the beautiful Gallia, fortress with twin towers, deep jungle and densely built city.
According to Weekly Famitsu, the game falls under the SRPG gender but features elements of third-person-shooting actions as well. The gameplay system is called BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zone systems), and it basically is “turn based battle system which blends the tactical features and action features” according to the official fact sheet.

The system features “Command mode” and “Action mode”. Command lets players strategies their tactics on a map while Action allows them to carry out those tactics in the aforementioned third-person-shooting styles. Players control the characters who have AP (Action Point) and will then return to Command mode once their AP is utilized.
In an earlier interview with Weekly Famitsu, producers Nishino Akira and Nonaka Ryutaro said that this is a warm story (hence the watercolor styles) about friendship and love in a small army. And I’m deeply in love with the game already. With so many high profile sequels also getting a spring time release in Japan, Gallian Chronicles appears to find it hard getting enough attention, but I hope it will bring success to the team and Sega so we can see more creative stuff from them.
The game was 60% done during Tokyo Game Show 2007 in September, so it looks like the team is on target for a spring release in Japan. With an official English title and fact sheet, the English version of the game is pretty much confirmed, it just couldn’t come soon enough for me.
