Demon’s Souls Guide

Demon's Souls

As you probably know, I have been playing Demon’s Souls and share some of my poor gaming skills here. The guides in this section will try to answer some of the frequently asked questions about the game, most of the information are based on the strategy guide by Weekly Famitsu, which unfortunately only covers the earlier areas. But I will continue to update this section based on guides from the Japanese wikis (links here and here). Beginners can read the Basics of the game below and if you can decide on your Origins (Class), you can find the comparison here.

Updates

Bosses page completed, with tons of help from our reviewer Victor, who cleared the game three times!

Basics

Body & Soul

Dying in Demon’s Souls turns you into soul form and since the game is so tough, it’s likely you will spend most of your time in the game in this form. The biggest disadvantage in soul form is your HP is halved, not ideal at all since recovering herbs are few and far between. To return to your physical body, you will need Stone of Ephemeral Eye, which is really rare, or defeat the bosses of the respective areas, which is even harder. By fulfilling certain conditions while going online helps you getting back into your body too.

What Happen If You Die?

Start over again…from the starting point (Archstone) of the current map, which is what makes the entire game so tense because these maps ain’t small, it takes minutes sometimes just to get to your previous location. And to make things even worse, all the enemies you’ve killed will re-spawn at the exact same location. Your hard earned souls will be kept at your dying spot and to recover it, you’ll need to stand above your own bloodstains (it will be lost forever if you died again before getting there). However, the good news is that you get to keep the weapons and items you picked up before and gates that you’ve opened before will remain so too.

Shortcuts

In order to quickly return to your previous location, it’s best to open as many gates as possible when you find the levers. In fact, this is one of the suggested strategies before you go meet the boss because some of these shortcuts shorten the journey considerably or they have the least smount of enemies, which save you from having to use your recovery items.

Learning Magic & Miracle

You can only learn Magic when your Magic attribute is 10 and it’s the same for Miracle, which you need Faith attribute to be 10. You can learn Magic and Miracle from Freke’s Apprentice and God’s Apprentice respectively but they can only teach you the basics. To learn the higher Magic and Miracle, you’ll need to rescue Philosopher Freki and Saint Urbain somewhere in Boletaria.

Don’t Kill The NPCs!

Yes, you can attack most of the guys in the Nexus but if they get hurt too much, they will stop selling stuff to you and apparently they all have important roles to play later in the story, which you’ll miss if you are not their best friend.

World Tendency

Demon's SoulsWorld Tendency indicates the “Soul Tendency” of that area, the darker it is, the stronger the demons there and sometimes new demons will appear there too. Your actions will determine the darkness/whiteness of that area, if you lost your body and become a soul, beat the NPCs and kill the white phantoms while going online, it increase the darkness of the area. On the other hand, when you kill the bosses and black phantoms or save the white phantom, that area will be ‘cleaner’ over time.

Battle System

Deadly Hit

There are two kinds of moves that will take out a huge chunk of your enemy’s HP when executed successfully. The first one is thrust attack where you lock-on to an enemy, move to his back and press R1 immediately for maximum damage (you can’t execute this with L1 pressed though). The second move is “Parry & Riposte”, which is much dangerous and tougher to execute. To perform this, make sure you have a shield or small weapon in your left hand, hit L2 just when your enemy’s attack is about to hit you, press R1 immediately after a success parry to perform a cool-looking hit that almost guarantees instant kill.

Just wanted to let another person in on a hardware hack, I have only tested it on a 3rd gen USA 80gig the one with only 2 usb slots. Ok this is a soul hack and a respawn hack, I was having a hard time With the Tower Knight. When I first steped in the room and got hit with that lanve throw i knew I was dead so I hit the eject button. The next time I booted up I respawned just moments befor I hent threw the fog. I ended up testing it a few more times. Works like a charm.

I would not resort to it all the time, it seems to stress the PS3 a bit. But let the system load up before starting the hack and slashing.

If it works for you send me a message on PSN… I don’t take any responce-ability to PS3 damage… That why I have not said anything. To anyone I am not sure if anyone has came across it but its cool.

Man this game is awesome! Just beat the first boss with 0 herbs left and 1 hit left in my hp and without getting killed once! Took me an hour and a half. This game is hard yet so fun!!!

Of course in demons souls fashion I walked into the next room and died instantly.

U need a catalyst. U can find one on the second tower in 1-2 with the two archers. U also need to visit the magic apprenrice or sage Freke and remember the spell. Good luck.

No internet here, just offline playthru. Is the key for Rydell’s cell in the next stage (3-2) or is it on 1-3? I have heard 2 diffrent stories and would hate to waste my time.(This game is really good for that tho)

you gotsta have the online….makes it a totally different beast. you can go as a soul into someones world and fight through the stage. If you die in anothers world you don’t have a penalty (no souls lost) and you get a nice practice battle with the boss.

It’s definately the best thing to have in this game, Im a little ashamed of it but i was having major trouble with the spider boss so i just summoned someone and let them kill the whole thing while i ate. And yeah my playtime is constricted too, i only get serious playtime on Saturday and after 8pm on sunday.

I figured out why my Demon Souls online wasnt working. When i just turn off my system without exiting to title screen the online wont work but when i exit properly it works. Im not sure if this is why or they fixed the server but it works now so i dont care what makes it work! And when i was reading this i noticed the guy who mentioned the hack. I wouldnt do this, or at least just turn off your system dont eject the disk thats a good way to ruin your disk, or even your playstation.

does anyone know where i can find a talisman?

    October 20th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
  21. Freddy Kruger

Silver catalyst would be in 2-2 I believe before u get to the armor spider, talisman would be in the valley of defilement (5-1). As u proceed down when u come to the first bridge u will notice a landing above the area across the bridge,(there will be an ogre with a flamed spear) the body on that ledge has a talisman on it

  22. jocy

the silver catalyst is in the 3-1 in a cell

and the talisman is in 4-1 at the top of the stairs just before the two skeleton archers

Hi guys, i just bought the game yesterday and been playing it for 4hrs now.. i decided to choose WANDERER as my CLASS, what should i pump in stats when i wanna be a MELEE FIGHTER? and what WEAPON can u guys recommend i should use?

    November 27th, 2009 at 2:44 am
  28. Thien

Go for hp, for you will need loads of life. Also go for stamina. However, the advice is to distribute everything evenly. For there are certain bosses that you may absolutely need magic to get pass. For a beginner, a sword would be good. A spear is also recommended. Anything else and you’ll need to be an advanced gamer.

I can’t figure out what what class to go with. I tried out all the classes and I liked the Wanderer, Knight, and Temple Knight all about the same. Can someone tell me which one I should go with and why?

  30. Ace

I liked the Wanderer cause of it’s HIGH DEX in the Beginning and has a fast sword to begin with to beat Vanguard(tutorial boss).. and wat i did to get good gear is bought a chain set from the lady in the swamp stage to get some decent defense..

    (i) Got the wing spear from one of the treasures lying around. But forgotten where. (ii) To defeat flamelurker, refer to the boss guide here or you can up your defense against fire and run to a dragon rib cage on the north-western corner (viewed from where you enter the cave). By systematically running around the rib cage, it forms an obstacle between you and flamelurker. Now take him out slowly using ranged attacks such as magic or a spear thrust. (iii) other than the “taling bird” you can also get colourless demon souls from huge demons that appear only at dark world tendency. They’re scattered around but there’s one in every world if I remember correctly

For everyone looking for better weapons, a better way is to upgrade the the ones you are currently using. It really does make a different! I made a magic-based one-handed sword for my high-magic stat wanderer and and it kicked arse compared to all the other ones I found

I like sticking to the Meat Cleaver, but I’ll occassionnally use the Dragon Bone Smasher. Both are large swords, so they’re slow but really powerful. Dragon Bone Smasher is stronger, but so slow. I’ve been sticking with my Meat Cleaver. Get the Meat Cleaver by beating the 4-1 boss, Adjudicator at the Shrine of Storms I think, and then you need a club to take to Blacksmith Ed to upgrade the club into a Meat Cleaver. Of course, you would had to have given him the Red Hot Demon soul so he can use other demon souls to upgrade your weapon. Get the Red Hot Demon Soul by beating the Flamelurker on level 3-2. He was a tough one, but worth it.
